Croque Madame – The Ultimate French Breakfast Sandwich
A Croque Madame is a French café classic—buttery toasted bread, melty cheese, savory ham, and creamy béchamel sauce, topped with perfectly cooked sunny-side-up eggs.
Ingredients:
🔸 2 slices of brioche or thick bread
🔸 2 tbsp unsalted butter
🔸 4 slices of ham
🔸 ½ cup shredded Gruyère cheese
🔸 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
🔸 1 cup milk
🔸 1 tsp Dijon mustard
🔸 Salt & pepper to taste
🔸 2 eggs
🔸 Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Make the béchamel sauce: In a pan, melt 1 tbsp butter, whisk in flour, then slowly add milk and Dijon mustard until thickened. Season with salt & pepper.
2️⃣ Assemble the sandwich: Butter one side of each slice of bread, then layer with ham, cheese, and béchamel sauce.
3️⃣ Grill to perfection: Cook the sandwich in a buttered pan over medium heat until golden brown and the cheese melts.
4️⃣ Fry the eggs: In a separate pan, cook 2 eggs sunny-side-up.
5️⃣ Top & Serve: Place the eggs on top of the sandwich, garnish with fresh parsley and black pepper.
