Cheesy Italian Breadsticks 🧀🍞
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Optional: marinara sauce for dipping
Instructions:
1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
3. Combine Wet and Dry: Create a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir until a dough starts to form.
4. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
5. First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
6. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
7. Shape Breadsticks: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ½ inch thick. Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the dough into strips, approximately 1 inch wide.
8. Add Cheese: Place the dough strips on the prepared baking sheet, and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan evenly over the sticks. If desired, twist each strip to create a fun shape.
9. Second Rise: Cover the tray with a towel and let the breadsticks rise for another 15-20 minutes.
10. Brush and Bake: Brush the tops of the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle with a little extra Italian seasoning. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
11. Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Pair with marinara sauce for dipping if desired.
