Ingredients:
For the Patties:
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Toppings:
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 tbsp butter or oil
4 slices of American or cheddar cheese
Lettuce, tomato, and pickles (optional)
For the Burger:
4 sesame seed buns
Mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard, to taste
Instructions:
Prepare the Onions:
Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook until golden and caramelized, about 10–15 minutes. Set aside.
Shape the Beef:
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions.
Roll each portion into a loose ball without packing too tightly.
Cook the Patties:
Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle on high heat until smoking.
Place a beef ball on the skillet and smash it flat with a heavy spatula or burger press until about 1/4 inch thick.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Cook for 2–3 minutes until the edges are crispy and browned.
Flip the patty and place a slice of cheese on top. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts.
Toast the Buns:
Lightly butter the insides of the buns and toast them on the skillet until golden brown.
Assemble the Burgers:
Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard on the toasted buns.
Add caramelized onions on the bottom bun.
Place the cheese-covered patty on top of the onions.
Add optional toppings like lettuce, tomato, and pickles, then cover with the top bun.
Serve:
Serve hot and enjoy your crispy, juicy smash burger!
