Cheese Puffs


   

These light and airy French cheese puffs are made with a classic choux pastry, loaded with Gruyère or Comté cheese, and baked until golden and crisp. Perfect as an appetizer, snack, or paired with wine!


Ingredients 🛒

1 cup water 💧

1/2 cup unsalted butter 🧈

1/2 tsp salt 🧂

1/4 tsp black pepper 🌟

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional) ✨

1 cup all-purpose flour 🌾

4 large eggs 🥚

1 1/4 cups shredded Gruyère, Comté, or sharp cheddar cheese 🧀

1/2 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for extra depth) 🌿

1 tbsp fresh chives or thyme, finely chopped (optional) 🌿

Instructions 👩‍🍳

1️⃣ Preheat & Prep:

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Make the Choux Pastry Dough:

In a saucepan, heat water, butter, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg over medium heat until butter melts.

Add flour all at once, stirring quickly with a wooden spoon until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan.

Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously to remove excess moisture.

Transfer dough to a mixing bowl and let cool slightly for 5 minutes.

3️⃣ Add Eggs & Cheese:

Beat in eggs, one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next.

Stir in cheese, Dijon mustard (if using), and fresh herbs. The dough should be smooth and slightly sticky.

4️⃣ Shape the Gougères:

Using a piping bag or two spoons, drop 1-inch mounds of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Optionally, sprinkle with extra cheese on top for extra crispiness.

5️⃣ Bake & Serve:

Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and puffed.

Serve warm, paired with wine, soups, or charcuterie boards.
